When They Breathe: Longtones in Conversations with Woodwind Specialists

When They Breathe: Longtones in Conversations with Woodwind Specialists is sourced from my core musical inspiration and the luminary woodwind Artists who make up a lineage of crafts-folks, virtuosos, and thinkers actively contributing to the robust cannon of Black music. I aim to deviate from Euro-centric pedagogical frameworks by uplifting an ongoing generational conversation about the spiritual, musical, and socio-political realities of breathing as a Black human.

tidewater pastoral

tidewater pastoral connects my curiosities about the history of my birthplace, newport news, virginia (hampton roads) and subjects such as the militarization of music education, colonialism, and the transatlantic black music experience. my zine contends with the colonial remnants of eurocentric music history which aims to dominate the narrative about black music objects. more specifically, the small art pieces within tidewater Pastoral recalls artifacts and natural objects associated with tidewater virginia’s seldom uplifted african-american musical memory.
